AMDi Augmentative and Alternative Communication Devices

Autism Spectrum Disorder

The provision of an appropriate communication aid is the key to unlocking communication skills in some individuals with Autism whom have difficulty communicating verbally. Discovering the most motivating communication interface for the individual is a critical component to fostering communication skills. AMDi offers a wide variety of interface options that allow for the creation of visually interesting communication overlays to help spark an individual’s interest and entice them to communicate. One such enticing series is the Smart Series of static display communication devices. Found to be effective with many individuals with Autism, these devices provide overlay creators with the flexibility to create innovative, exciting activities that foster communication skills. With the introduction of a flash card, located in the back of the devices, all Smart Series devices have overlay recognition, limitless levels, and the ability to achieve high quality sound recordings. By using Overlay Designer Pro, new software that allows for the creation of overlays and sound recording, high quality sound files can be added to activities. Using sound clips of favorite movie lines when requesting movies, the sound of a family pet when sharing during circle time, or a clip of a favorite song can often be what captures an individual’s attention and creates interest in interacting and communicating with a device. In addition to heightening interest auditorally, AMDi’s Smart/128 device has the capability to create customizable cell configurations which allows for the use of visual scene communication displays. Visual scenes not only provide contextual relevance to targeted vocabulary but create high interest. To assist caregivers and individuals on the path to communication success, the Smart Ease activities have been created as companion activities. These activities are pre-made pre-recorded communication overlays that address national content standards while increasing communication skills. Many of these activities have been created and proved effective in the increased vocabulary and conversations skills of individuals with Autism. These titles include Exploring Nouns and Exploring Verbs, Next Steps, Fun with Science and many more. These communication activities were specifically created to be visually interesting, include sound bites, and are interactive.
